Vie di fuga takes Bach’s counterpoint as a method rather than a store of recognisable tunes. Maurizio Giammarco transfers the fugue’s independent lines to a sixteen-piece jazz orchestra, where composed material and improvisation can pull in different directions without losing the structure.

Released in 2012, this was Giammarco’s second project with the Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo. The subtitle The Bach Open Project captures the premise: Bach supplies the architecture, while the players keep opening new routes through it.
