Reviewing Impromptu, Jon Garelick initially mistook the trio’s Chopin Nocturne for a half-remembered standard, hearing imaginary words in its rhythm before recognising the source.
Rosenthal later described his approach to classical themes as finding new harmonies, forms and rhythmic feels that allow them to sound natural in jazz.
