After two albums devoted entirely to Bach, Jens Schöwing widened Blue Note Bach’s field to Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Debussy. For Schöwing, the title Nocturne embraces both the quiet of night and its imaginative pull.

The vibraphone heard on the surrounding Blue Note Bach records is absent here, returning Schöwing to the leaner sound of piano, double bass and drums. Their long experience together allows the music to move between close readings and much freer improvisation without disturbing the album’s unhurried atmosphere.
