Berney built 3+3 around an exact opposition: a classical piano trio and a jazz piano trio.

Here Ravel’s Piano Trio is split into halves, with Berney’s six Irruptions placed between them; the two groups meet only in the Passacaille.

Berney said he wanted to write from Ravel’s Trio, not put “jazzy chatter” over classical themes.
