Lewis admitted approaching the Nippon Phonogram commission “with some trepidation”.

His solution was unusually structural: the preludes became solo-piano performances with improvised passages, while the fugue voices were divided among piano, guitar and bass, with violin and viola added when Bach wrote four or five parts.
